I think by "polyacene," they mean a form of graphitic carbon. Note that the way they get the coating is described within the experimental section:
A stoichiometric mixture of Li2CO3, FePO4·2H2O, and the desired amount of phenol–formaldehyde resin was added. The mixture was milled for 10 h, followed by heat treatment under a N2 (90%)+H2 (10%) atmosphere, to obtain a final LiFePO4–PAS (8.5 wt% PAS) composite.
